Needs of a new age startup

Gone are the days when startups used to happen in makeshift garage offices (hello Apple) or sublet apartments (#TVFPitchers fans, anyone?). Today, startups are happening in offices that will give the Skyscrapers of DLF Phase 3(Gurgaon) a run for their money. They not only have the funding but also have a well-defined organizational culture. They have a dedicated team handling various departments of their business. The number of employees working at these startups has also increased compared to their predecessors. This increase in numbers naturally means the HR needs of the startups have also changed considerably. Some of the changes that can be seen today are in,

Recruitment
The majority of the recruitment at startups in the 90s and 2000s was on a referral or connection basis. If a job vacancy had to be put up, it used to be done in classifieds, and walk-in interviews used to take place. There was not much emphasis on the terms like “time to hire,” volume of response, recruitment campaign focus, and overall talent attraction success. We now understand the importance of hiring the right talent and the cost of hiring a new employee. This is especially important for startups as, generally, they are on a tight budget and cannot afford mistakes in their recruitments.

Training and Development
The training was predominantly a corporate culture. In startups, employees had to learn independently or get help from some of their contacts. Startup training is essential and can be quickly done at startups because of their small size and less bureaucracy. This investment into the training of an individual has helped startups perform better and have a better retention rate. Employees can see their personal development, which is a key metric that individuals look for in today’s jobs. In fact lack of Personal Development has contributed to 21% in the #thegreatresignation.

HR software
HR and HR software were not considered important by the technical startups in the earlier days. According to them, HR hindered the workplace environment they wanted to create. This is not the case anymore. Startups are making use of HRM software to help automate some of the HR task. They also use software such as ATS to shortlist candidates and keep track of the applications.
